A Missed Opportunity

I saw this old, scraggly, beanpole of a black man standing on the street corner. He was carrying a white cane and was wildly looking back and forth.

"Help me, Help me cross the street," he cried.

The tourists walked by, looking strangely at him.

"Help me."

Out of nowhere, this black kid in his mid-twenties came up on a bicycle, head full of dreadlocks. He jumped off his bike and grabbed the old man around the shoulder, the old man embraced him. Shoulder to shoulder, this kid led him across the street.

On the other side of the street, the stranger let go of the old man's shoulder and quickly pedaled off in the other direction.

We were a few steps behind. I had my camera in my bag, but didn't have enough time to pull it out. I wanted to remember this small act of compassion.

Would I have helped him? Would you have?
